Miss 4.5 has been asking me for days to make 'shakey ice cream' as she saw on Play School, then I saw the recipe on Kiddley! Made the custard earlier in the afternoon and the whole family sat down with little bags of it in bigger bags of ice and salt, shaking, kneading and crushing for 10mins.... YUM! This was the best ice cream EVER! The trick? DO NOT skimp on ice. One of us didn't have enough and the ice cream didn't go hard. Stick with it.. it DOES work.

We used to make ice cream in coffee cans when I was in summer camp. It's a great way to keep kids occupied for an hour or so (two hours if you preceed it with a blackberry picking session) and made some of the best ice cream I've ever eaten.

Of course, not as many people have coffee cans lying around these days...and the cans are often not metal. I'm sure the ziplock version is fun too.

We recently had a new ice cream shop open up where we live. The only ice cream shop in town. It is kind of the luxurious type of ice cream but heavenly at the same time so you tend to forget you had to take out a second mortgage to pay for it. Some older people (in their 80's) were saying it won't last the winter because people don't eat ice-cream in the winter. I know we live in a cooler climate here near Seattle, but like you said, I can't imagine a time not to eat ice cream. We eat it year around and love it in any climate.

That's wonderful! As we speak, Justine on Playschool is making 'shakey icecream' like the ziplock bag method. Freaky coincidence. But lovely! I love Kiddley and visit daily. Thanks Guys!

Oooh, I could dream about ice cream! It's 100 degrees here (38 Celcius) and we've had yet another power outage today. I think I could be elected mayor with some plastic zip bags, ice, salt, and the fixings! What a fun idea, I can't wait to try it...thanks!

Take a look at <a href="http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?page=ice-cream-ball&categoryId=46727&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&parentCategory=3899&cat4=1099&shop_method=pp&feat=sdp117" rel="nofollow">these</A> fun colored ice cream balls from LLBean. The colors are so vibrant and it makes doing the “coffee can” method a bit more colorful. They’re available in pint and quart sizes. My niece is crazy about her bright pink one and she insists her ice cream be pink (strawberry) to match.

I've made ice cream using the can method and it turned out quite well. We had the kids roll the cans down a long hill for the alloted time instead of kick them. We also made a version that didn't use eggs - just a cream, milk, and sugar variety - so if anyone is worried about allergies you could still do this for sure.
